A Guide to Karaoke Etiquette: Tips and Rules to Follow

Like any social activity, karaoke singing before an audience demands exercising some caution and behaving appropriately. Follow these karaoke etiquette rules closely, so as not to offend other people. Because when you’re out in a karaoke bar or social gathering where karaoke is being hosted, you need to keep in mind that everybody is there for fun. Please don’t spoil it for yourself or for others. Here is a list of karaoke rules and some basic dos and don’ts. Enjoy your karaoke night!

Rules Regarding Karaoke Equipment & Supplies:

  • Treat the karaoke jockey’s equipment with care. Don’t pull on wires. Avoid swinging, dropping, hitting or blowing into the microphone.
  • Don’t fold, roll or damage the karaoke songbook in any way.
  • Be careful not to spill your drink on any of the karaoke equipment or wires.

Proper Etiquette Towards Karaoke Performers:

  • Show respect for all performers. Never behave rudely toward any karaoke singer – karaoke is all about having fun!
  • Reward each karaoke singer with applause – it feels really good!
  • Don’t walk in front of the singer or karaoke monitor.
  • Don’t invite yourself on stage or start singing with the current karaoke performer unless asked.
  • If you can’t hear the singer well, let them know in a kindly manner.

Rules When Singing Karaoke:

  • Never use offensive or vulgar language while performing karaoke. There may be kids or seniors present.
  • When on stage, focus on karaoke singing. It’s not the time for monologues, jokes, or speeches.
  • Allow everyone to have a turn. If there are many karaoke singers, step away from the mic after a couple songs. Allow others to showcase their karaoke talent too.
  • Avoid bringing drinks up on stage. It’s not necessary to be drunk in order to sing.

Appropriate Etiquette Towards the Karaoke Jockey/Song Selection:

  • Accurately fill out your karaoke request slip. Make sure your song selection is correct and include your real name, not an alias. This will help the karaoke jockey keep the show moving smoothly.
  • Be flexible if the karaoke jockey doesn’t have your favorite karaoke song. Select another one. Also, nobody has the sole right to sing a particular song.
  • Be mindful of your karaoke audience when choosing a song to avoid offending anyone.
  • Please be patient when waiting for your turn at karaoke. Don’t nag the karaoke jockey for your turn. A KJ will have their particular way of working (e.g. first come, first served basis, songs grouped by music category).
  • When your name is called, get to the karaoke mic as soon as you can. Sing the song you’ve selected. If you must leave, please inform the karaoke jockey.
  • Do treat your KJ well. Thank them for a show well done. Also, consider giving a tip. However, don’t tip the karaoke jockey in order to have a turn sooner.
