Karaoke History: Origins and Meaning

Here is a brief review of karaoke history and some interesting karaoke info. So, what is karaoke? The word “karaoke” has been derived from the Japanese words “kara” (a part of “karrappo” meaning empty) and ‘oke’ (a part of ‘okesutora’ meaning orchestra). So, by definition, karaoke means empty orchestra. Because it is translated from the Japanese phonetically, karaoke is often misspelled as “karioke,” “kareoke,” “karyoke,” “karoke,” or “karaokee.” Conventional music has both vocals and music. Karaoke music, however, has only the musical track and no vocals. It is generally a live person, an amateur most of the times, who provides the vocals by singing into a microphone while she/he reads the lyrics from a monitor.

Though the exact history of karaoke is unclear, it is generally agreed that karaoke originated in Kobe, Japan. Most of the info available on the exact way karaoke originated comes from folklore. According to one story, karaoke was first developed in a snack bar when a singer could not keep his appointment due to sickness. The bar owner then put on some music tapes and asked the audience if they would like to sing. And everyone ended up enjoying it. This story is probably more legend than factual information.

Since then, the Japanese concept of karaoke has become an entertainment rage worldwide, and like everything else, has changed along with technological advancements. Karaoke has gone forward from tapes to CDs and then to DVDs.

With the introduction of home karaoke systems, anyone could sing karaoke in the privacy and convenience of their home. This is especially good for kids, not to mention adults who are a bit shy or don’t like to socialize much. Karaoke is a great way to bring people together, be it in a bar, restaurant or in your home.
