Karaoke Monitors: Beginning Information about Types and Features

Karaoke monitors and karaoke monitor stands are important equipment to have for a karaoke session, especially when used in professional settings. Monitors used for karaoke purposes are often called by other names such as karaoke video monitor, karaoke TV or TV screen.

A monitor is used for the purpose of displaying any background images and song lyrics as well as allowing the singer to hear himself/herself sing. In the simplest system, a monitor is connected to a karaoke machine. There are various types of monitors such as powered, slave, portable, etc. A slave monitor is meant to be attached to the audio system by a speaker lead from the karaoke mixer or mixing amplifier. Usually, this monitor’s volume is controlled by the mixer. On the other hand, powered monitors have their own power source and set of controls, but are also connected to the mixer/mixing amp via a speaker lead. Therefore, control a powered monitor’s sound volume and tone in conjunction with your mixer. Additionally, a powered monitor can be used temporarily as a simple amplifier in emergencies by connecting your karaoke machine and speakers to it. Sometimes a regular TV is used as a monitor, especially for home karaoke users.

When purchasing a monitor you should take into consideration features like screen size, type of screen (e.g. TFT LCD screen), color vs. black & white, digital tuner for TV viewing, built-in speakers, A/V jacks, and remote control capability.

For proper positioning and protection, consider buying a good quality stand for your karaoke monitor. Features to look out for when buying karaoke TV stands include adjustable height and width, microphone holders and locking wheels.
