Karaoke Speakers: Types and Buying Tips

Karaoke speakers are specially designed for superior karaoke sound reproduction of live vocals as well as music. Regular hi-fi speakers will be sufficient for playing just music. But what you need in a karaoke performance is your voice to sound wonderful – and a karaoke speaker does just that!

When choosing speakers for your karaoke system, make sure you buy ones of good quality. Cheap speakers do not handle live vocal frequencies well and can make your karaoke singing voice sound muddy and distorted. Poor performing speakers will also suppress your voice when you are singing loudly. A professional quality karaoke speaker is also designed to accommodate microphone feedback so that your karaoke singing comes across clearly.

There are various types of speakers. So, it is helpful to get acquainted with the features of each before deciding on one that best suits your needs.

Subwoofers or woofers are speakers that are specially designed to produce low audio frequencies. The deep bass sounds that emanate from these speakers really grab you. In contrast, tweeter speakers produce treble/high audio frequencies while midrange speakers emit sound in the mid frequency bass range. There are also general full-range speakers which produce a wide range of these audio frequencies, but to the lesser extreme at the low and high end.

Vocal speakers are built to emit your live karaoke voice beautifully and keep the music from overriding your singing. Another type is a monitor speaker, which is directed toward the singer to help with hearing one’s singing and the music.

A home theater speaker system with surround sound is also a great karaoke favorite. These types of speakers create the feeling of being immersed in three-dimensional sound. Powered speakers contain a built-in amplifier, which boosts sound signals. The resulting karaoke sound produced from these speakers is loud and clear.

An easy and economical option is to buy a speaker package system that includes several different kinds of speakers. Also consider purchasing speaker stands to position and protect your speakers. Some speaker packages also include stands.

Each speaker will come with several specifications such as power output in watts (how much power a speaker can handle from an amplifier before it is damaged), impedance (specified in ohms indicating the amount of electrical resistance given to the current from the amplifier; problems can occur if you use speakers with low impedance of 4 ohms or less with amplifiers not capable of producing high current), sensitivity (the higher the number, the greater the speaker’s efficiency for converting power into sound) and range of frequency response.

Select your speakers with care and consideration for they are important components of your karaoke system. Make sure your speakers are compatible with your other karaoke equipment such as your player, amplifier, or mixer. Ask for advice from an experienced friend or a karaoke retail professional when you purchase your speakers.
